My research process was really nothing special. The first thing I typed on safari was “Mum Bett or Elizabeth Freeman”. Since I had prior knowledge that this topic had little extensive information I kept my searches short and sweet. I used the method of reading several websites and creating questions as I read. It was a little tough to find different questions because all the stories on the websites were the same. They all said that Bett was raised in John Ashley's home and then one day Hannah Ashley hit her on the face leaving her with a scar. I sometimes had to make up obvious questions such as “When did Mum Bett die” or “Date of death” . I could not find the information on how Bett died or her exact age. I believe that she died from natural causes or of old age and she did not have an exact age on recorded as she was born right into slavery. The book definitely helped me answer many question such as her legacy and her life after the case. My real “Eureka!” moment was when I found the page for the Ashley House. I found out that there was an exhibit where I can add to my essay and hopefully find some more primary sources . I had assumed that the Bett’s house would have been torn down by now or renovated because her story seemed to have been hidden from many history books. However the house has a full exhibit and even a day dedicated to Bett! It is apparent in my endnotes that the number one source I used was the book. It was that most expansive amount of knowledge out there. However, at some points I felt like a director choosing what points I should add from the book into my essay.
